A Different Side of Florida: Falling Waters State Park in Chipley

When you picture a Florida getaway, a waterfall probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But in Chipley, Falling Waters State Park offers a surprise: Florida’s highest waterfall, tucked into a landscape of tall trees, fern-covered sinkholes and winding trails. Florida State Parks

My family and made a stop on our travels this summer to check it out. Recomend stopping as it was a great chance to get out the car walk and stretch. However it was not a long stop. The waterfall is just a few hundred feet from the parking lot and a lot like Chevy Chase, I took a dep breath said look kids waterfall and then hopped back in the car. Found it interesting that it is the largest waterfall because it falls into a sink hole which made it worth seeing. 

The main attraction is Falling Waters Sink. A small stream drops about 73 feet into a deep, cylindrical sinkhole before disappearing into a cave below. Follow the boardwalk to the viewing platforms for a look into the sinkhole. The lower platform brings you closer to the falls, while the upper platform offers a view from above. Florida State Parks

The waterfall changes with the weather. After plenty of rain, you may see a stronger cascade; during dry periods, it can slow to a trickle. If seeing the falls in full flow is the reason for your trip, call the park before you go. Florida State Parks

There’s more to enjoy beyond the waterfall. You can walk the park’s trails, look for butterflies and birds, bring a picnic, or swim in the lake. If you want to stay longer, the park also has campsites nestled among the pines and dogwoods. Florida State Parks

Falling Waters State Park makes a peaceful stop on a North Florida road trip. It’s only a few miles south of I-10, yet the wooded setting feels far removed from the highway. Come for the waterfall, then leave time to explore the rest of the park. Florida State Parks
